Faith vs. Fables: Reclaiming the True Biblical Christian Traditions and Symbols

The blog post "When Faith Becomes Fables" by Samantha Conners emphasizes the need for believers to intentionally preserve the spiritual significance of Easter traditions for future generations. However, for many Christians in the United States, it may already be too late. The traditions and symbols of Christian holidays like Easter and Christmas have largely been reduced to cultural fables, disconnected from their Biblical roots. This erosion of spiritual meaning stems from the prevalence of secular terms and customs that overshadow the truth of Scripture.

Secular Symbols and Their Impact

  1. Easter Traditions: Customs like the Easter Bunny, colored eggs, and egg hunts hold no spiritual significance. They bear no connection to the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

  2. Christmas Traditions: Similarly, Santa Claus, Christmas trees, flying reindeer, and gift-giving are disconnected from the birth of Jesus Christ. While some attempt to attach spiritual meaning to these practices, such interpretations are man-made rather than rooted in Scripture.

The Origins of "Easter"

The term "Easter" itself further exemplifies this disconnection. The Hebrew word Pesach (פסח) is accurately translated as "Passover" in the Bible and respected dictionaries like Merriam-Webster and Cambridge. Yet, "Easter," a Germanic and English replacement term, has taken its place in many Christian traditions, particularly in the United States. This term, absent from Scripture, fails to convey the true essence of Jesus's sacrifice and resurrection. Instead, it creates confusion and contradicts the testimony of Scripture.

Jesus's journey—from His betrayal and arrest, to His crucifixion during Passover, to His being in the tomb during the Feast of Unleavened Bread, and His resurrection on the Feast of First Fruits—aligns perfectly with the Biblical narrative. In contrast, the term "Easter" and its associated secular customs dilute these profound truths.

The Need for Biblical Alignment

The same pattern can be seen in Christmas traditions, where secular symbols overshadow the celebration of Christ's birth. These terms and traditions matter. If they lack roots in the truth of God's Word, the Church should consider abandoning them. Instead, Christians should strive to use Biblical terms and traditions to commemorate significant events in faith. Where no such terms or traditions exist, new practices should be created—ones that align with Scripture and uphold its testimony.

A Call to Action

For believers, this is a call to reclaim the authenticity of their faith. By realigning traditions with Scripture and discarding secular distortions, the Church can preserve the spiritual essence of its celebrations for future generations. Let us ensure that our faith remains deeply rooted in the truth of God's Word, rather than diluted by cultural fables.
